New marketing initiatives for tea planned

Mohan Padmanabhan

Kolkata , Jan. 2

The Tea Board plans to launch a new marketing initiative, which will include foray into new markets such as Iran, Pakistan, Vietnam and Egypt, said the Union Minister of State for Commerce, Mr Jairam Ramesh.

Renewed efforts in traditional markets for Indian tea such as Russia, UK, Iraq and UAE would also be made.

He said the plan was to double tea exports to Pakistan from the present 8 million kg to 16 million kg by 2007.

Asked when the pending visit of the Indian tea delegation to Pakistan would take place, he said it was likely after completion of the proposed visit to Pakistan of Mr Pranab Mukherjee, the External Affairs Minister.
