Calcutta Book Fair: Publishers guild moves HC for order on venue

Our Legal Correspondent

Kolkata , Jan. 2

The Book Sellers and Publishers Guild, Kolkata filed a petition in the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday, seeking permission to hold the 2007 edition of the Calcutta Book Fair at the Maidan, a Defence department-owned area.

In 2006, the court granted a conditional permission that 2006 Kolkata Book Fair would be held at Maidan for the last time and from 2007, the fair shall be held at any place other than the Maidan.

This year the State Government has given the go-ahead for the Fair to be held in the Maidan.

The Department of Defence raised an objection initially, but subsequently gave its consent for holding the fair in the area, which belongs to it.

Earlier order

It is now the turn of the Calcutta High Court to modify its earlier order for holding the 2007 Fair at the Maidan.

In the petition, the Guild prayed for modification of the order on the ground that if the venue was shifted, the Book fair shall lose its charm, a deciding factor for the hundreds of book-sellers who will face a financial crunch.

It is felt that there was no centrally located place to hold such a huge fair, attracting lakhs of people daily.

The matter will appear on January 5, 2007.
