Infrastructure clocks 9.5 per cent growth in Nov

Buoyed by oil refinery production and cement sectors, the six core infrastructure sector output grew 9.5 per cent in November from a year earlier, faster than 9 per cent annual growth clocked in October, Government data showed on Tuesday.

The sector had showed an annual 5.7 per cent growth in November 2005.

The index of six core infrastructure industries, having a combined weightage of 26.7 per cent in the overall Index for Industrial Production, stood at 221.6 points in November this fiscal compared to 202.4 points during the same month in 2005.

Infrastructure output cumulatively during the April-November period this fiscal rose 7.8 per cent, as against 5.2 per cent during the corresponding period a year ago.

Petroleum, cement

According to the data, the petroleum refinery production exhibited an increase of 16.4 per cent in November 2006, from a mere 1.5 per cent growth clocked during the corresponding month of previous year.

The cement sector emerged as second best performer with an increase in output of 11.5 per cent for November compared to 7.8 per cent.

Showing a turnaround, the crude petroleum output posted an increase of 10.1 per cent in November, as against a negative 8.5 per cent.

Power generation

Electricity generation grew by 8.8 per cent in November, against 3.4 per cent during the corresponding period a year ago.

However, growth in finished steel and coal production declined to 9 per cent and 4.9 per cent in November this fiscal, from 14.8 per cent and 6.9 per cent, respectively.
