The Hindu Business Line : Nasscom plans cyber labs in more cities

The lab will train at least 1,000 law enforcement officials annually on cyber crime investigation techniques and provide ongoing technical support for investigation.

, As part of its efforts to create an ecosystem to use technology for solving cyber crime, the National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom) proposes to set up cyber labs in major information technology locations across the country.

"We plan to set up cyber labs in cities such as New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkota and Hyderabad through public-private initiative," said Mr Nandakumar Saravade, Director-Cyber Security and Compliance, Nasscom.

Mr Saravade was speaking at the inauguration of the Cyber Lab in Bangalore set up jointly by the Nasscom and the Karnataka Government and supported by Canara Bank.

Modern Techniques

The Bangalore Cyber Lab, the third facility of its kind in the country after Mumbai and Thane, would train law-enforcing officials in investigating and combating the rising incidences of cyber crimes. Cyber crime was an emerging area and the Bangalore lab will introduce police investigators to modern techniques of investigations and make them understand e-technology and equip themselves to face emerging challenges, Mr Sarvade said.

The lab will train at least 1,000 law enforcement officials annually on cyber crime investigation techniques and provide ongoing technical support for investigation, the Karnataka DG and IGP, Mr K.R. Srinivasan, said.

The Canara Bank Chairman and Managing Director, Mr M.B.N. Rao, who inaugurated the facility, said the bank saw the lab as an important tool to learn about possible forms of cyber crimes and ways to tackle them.

Banks have been facing a bit of "unease" in the era of Internet banking, transactions through credit cards, ATM and e-banking, Mr Rao said and hoped that it will promote safe use of IT and increase awareness among users.
