Sattur chamber plea for broad gauge line

Our Correspondent

Madurai , Jan. 4

Sattur Chamber of Commerce and Industry has appealed for conversion of Dindigul-Coimbatore MG line into BG line immediately.

In a letter addressed to the Union Railway Minister Mr Lalu Prasad, the Chamber Secretary, Mr P.T.K.A. Balasubramanian, has pointed out that the conversion would help to reduce the distance between the two destinations, which at present under the BG line, currently running through Karur and Erode involve excessive travel by 80 kms.

Similarly the travel to Guruvayoor from Madurai via Nagercoil, Tiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam and Trissur is 603 kms. But the distance between the two destinations via Dindigul, Palani, Pollachi, Palakkad, Soranur and Trissur would only be 333 kms.

If the Dindigul-Palakkkad-Coimbatore MG line is converted into BG line, people would benefit more. Further, there is no train to Goa from south Tamil Nadu.

The conversion would facilitate comfortable travel to Goa, the tourist centre and other important cities in the region such as Mangalore, Calicut, Ratnagiri and also to Mumbai.

A train to Surat and Ahmedabad from Madurai via the Konkan railway line may also be introduced, he has added.
