THE STANDSTILL machines at the century old Howrah Mills Ltd on Friday in Howrah district, West Bengal. With a strength of 3,750 workers, the jute mill handles 125 mt everyday.

Nearly 2.5 lakh workers from 55 jute mills, belonging to 20 unions, have called for an indefinite strike on various demands. The jute industry in Bengal handles a business of nearly Rs 6 crore per day.
