SIMA seeks total abolition

G. Gurumurthy

Coimbatore , Jan. 6

The Southern India Mills Association (SIMA) has urged the Centre to abolish the Textiles Committee cess for the entire textile chain.

While welcoming the recent announcement by the Government on abolition of the Textiles Committee cess on readymade garments, the SIMA chairman, Mr S.V. Arumugam, said the abolition should cover the entire textile industry, including the spinning sector, which is likely to be affected by the sensitive list of various free trade agreements signed by the Indian Government recently.

Recalling the long standing demand of the industry to abolish the cess, the SIMA chairman said the Textiles Committee cess, introduced in 1963 to fund the Committee's activities, such as mandatory preshipment quality inspection, had been in vogue though the Committee's quality inspection was withdrawn a decade ago. The cess collected from the industry used to be deposited into the consolidated fund of India and only a part of that was being released to the Textiles Committee to meet its expenditure.
