Shipping Government - Politics States - West Bengal Kolkata port reports normal working Our Bureau
Kolkata , Jan. 8 The Kolkata Port Trust reported normal working at both Kolkata Dock System (KDS) and Haldia dock on the bandh day on Monday. The bandh was called by various political parties, including the Congress, the Trinamool Congress, the BJP, the SUCI and others in protest of killing at Nandigram, a village near Haldia, over land acquisition by the State Government for setting up a chemical hub and other projects. Normal loading/unloading operation was reported in respect of seven ships in KDS and 15 others at Haldia, according to a spokesman for the port. Ship movement to and from the docks too was normal, he said.
KDS employees
While the attendance of Class III and IV employees in KDS was less than normal, the officers and cargo-handling workers turned up in full strength. The attendance of all categories of workers and employees and officers at Haldia was normal, the spokesman added. At the Sandheads, the mouth of the Hooghly river, there was as many as 14 ships waiting - 12 of them for Haldia and two for KDS. Half of the Haldia-bound vessels were in ballast. That is to say, these vessels are due to load at Haldia. Among the other waiting vessels, there are three crude tankers, one each carrying peas, steel, containers and petroleum products.
