Kharadi SEZ in Pune goes online

Kharadi, in Pune has become the first SEZ (special economic zone) to go online. VSNL (Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd) is the first entrant into the SEZ. According to Mr Atul Chordia, Managing Director, Panchshil Realty, states that it is the first notified SEZ in the country, which is going online.

Talking to presspersons, Mr John Hayduk, Chief Technology Officer, Senior Vice-President, Operations, Engineering, VSNL International, said the project is located at EON Free Zone in the MIDC (Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation) Knowledge Park in Kharadi.

Currently, the EON free zone houses an incubation centre for start-ups, which can cater to up to 1,000 people. VSNL has taken up 200 seats and Eaton 400 seats. Eaton is the next entrant into this facility and would be setting up the global engineering design centre and has already taken up space of 1,30,000 sq ft. Mr John said the entire facility, of about 87,000 sq ft., earmarked for VSNL would be ready by June 2007 and would initially have about 150 people. It would ramp it up to 450 within the next 12 to 18 months, he said.
