If you are keen to be at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, then any delay in making a package booking with the official airline, Air China, could prove to be a costly mistake.

"We are offering comprehensive packages for the Olympics that include not only return air fare, but also hotel accommodation and tickets for the games. The earlier the booking is made, the better are the chances of getting a package at hugely discounted rates," the Country Manager of Air China, Mr Zhao Quanzhen, told Business Line.

50 pc discount

The discount could be as much as 50 per cent of what a traveller to the Games would have to pay at a later stage, airline officials said.

The airline has booked several hundred rooms in various hotels in Beijing and is leveraging its international and domestic connectivity to offer reduced rate packages for travellers. The two-week-long sporting event starts on August 8 next year.

The airline currently operates four-times-a-week between Beijing and Delhi using a Boeing 767-300 aircraft and it plans to start operating an Airbus A-330 aircraft ahead of the Olympics that would offer an additional 260 seats-a-week in each direction.

Talks with Indian

Air China is also in talks with Indian to rework its existing agreement with the state-owned carrier, the completion of which would allow passengers from other parts of the country to travel to abroad at reduced rates.

"The firming of the agreement with Indian could see a passenger connecting with the Beijing flight paying anything up to $ 100 less than what they are paying at present," said Mr Zhao.

The airline started operating between Delhi and Beijing from October last year and is currently reporting passenger loads in excess of 80 per cent.

"The current passenger profile is diverse and a large number of passengers travelling with us are flying only till China. We are seeing a number of passengers from Kolkata connecting on our flight," said Mr Zhao.
