Suguna Poultry to launch layer breed next month

G. Gurumurthy

GERMANY'S LOHMAN

Coimbatore , Jan. 9

Suguna Poultry Farm Ltd, the vertically integrated poultry company from Coimbatore and a major meat chicken producer in the country, is getting into layer segment as well.

The company will launch commercial marketing of "Lohman" bred layer chickens into the country's traditionally strong layer markets of Namakkal, Hyderabad and Vijayawada by next month.

"The launch will be made by second week of February," said Mr B. Soundarajan, Managing Director of Suguna Poultry Farm Ltd. It has set up its office in Namakkal.

High yielding

Mr Soundarajan, who did not disclose the number of layers to be released by his company, told Business Line that the new layer breed from Germany was high yielding. Besides higher number of layings, the size of the eggs to be laid by the breed would be bigger and also its feed-conversion ratio would be lower compared to the ones available in the market.

Suguna Poultry has already set up its breeder farm for the "Lohman" chicken production at Hiriyur near Bangalore. The company is also planning to get into value-added "designer" egg market aimed at calorie/fat conscious consumers, which may also be released next month.

Widening the product offer, including the layer chickens, forms part of the corporate expansion of Suguna Poultry, which is also seeking to get into contract farming of maize, a key input for poultry feed industry. The company, which is scaling up its broiler production from the present five million birds a week to 6.5 million next year, would annually require 10 lakh tonnes of maize for captive consumption, up from its present consumption of 6-7 lakh tonnes.

As a first step, it has inducted a 50-member team to organise contract cultivation of maize in Karnataka's traditional corn areas of Davangere, Shimoga and two other centres.
