`Telecom gear manufacturing base needed'

New Delhi , Jan. 9

Despite foreign telecommunication equipment companies setting up manufacturing bases, India needs to develop technology and its own base for equipment manufacturing, expressed Mr Sam Pitroda, while addressing a press conference during the second Pravasi Bhartiya Divas here.

"Unlike China, India had missed the bus in telecom manufacturing. Having foreign manufacturers is not sufficient for the country. While India may be emerging as a services economy, it could not afford to ignore manufacturing," said Mr Pitroda. However, in response to his comment, Mr N.K. Goyal, former President, Telecom Equipment Manufacturing Association, said, "The amount of investment is the same for an Indian company as that of any foreign manufacturer. However, I don't think it really matters who is setting up facility in the country as long as investments are coming in." Talking about the initiatives being taken at the Indo American Council, Mr Pitroda said that the council was focussing on connecting US expertise with Indian professionals in the area of water, environment, poverty and education.
