`Landline customers can have a tab over billings'

Kolkata , Jan. 10

Calcutta Telephones will soon launch a prepaid over post-paid (POP) service for landline telephones.

Soon, landline telephone customers of Calcutta Telephones can purchase prepaid recharge vouchers and charge the same to their post-paid connections. All they need to do is to dial the service access code followed by the PIN number.

The service is expected to benefit BSNL Kolkata landline customers in many ways. These include having a check on their own billings as well as minimising complaints on excessive billings, said Dr S.K. Chakravarty, Chief General Manager of Calcutta Telephones, during an interactive session with the members of Merchants' Chamber of Commerce (MCC).

Dr Chakravarty said that since customers would have to pay upfront for the POP service, BSNL would wait for some time for the service to pick up before considering the passing over of a part of the overhead costs that would be saved to the customer as fiscal incentive.

According to him, Calcutta Telephones would launch voice telephony over IP TV by March next year. Customers with broadband connectivity - and who currently have access to data and pictures over the same - would be able to enjoy voice connectivity with customers who have similar broadband connectivity with access to IP telephony. Depending upon the service that is rendered, and the usage experience of the customer, making such IP-based telephone calls free would be considered, he said.

Earlier, in his address, the President of MCC, Mr Santosh Saraf, spoke about the proposal to introduce a single levy regime for telecom service providers. If the proposal goes through, telecom service providers would get considerable relief even as customers would benefit in terms of lower rentals, faster and better services, etc, he said.
