Hyderabad , Jan. 10

A group of four UK experts will address a special session of the `International Workshop on R&D Challenges in Carbon Capture and Storage Technology (CCS) for Sustainable Energy Future', here on Friday.

The session is sponsored by the British High Commission in India. Mr Mike Connor, British Deputy High Commissioner for South India, will address the gathering, according to a release.

The UK experts include Mr Tim Dixon from the UK Department of Trade and Industry, Dr Sam Holloway from the British Geological Survey, Mr Andy Timms from Doosan Babcock Energy Ltd and Dr Jon Gibbons from the Energy Technology for Sustainable Development Group of Imperial College, London.

The release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere is a major cause of climate change. CCS technology helps contain the release of CO2 into the atmosphere. The UK experts will make presentations on cutting-edge research in CCS technology. They will also discuss power plant strategies if the world moves to a carbon-constrained 21st century.

Developing strategy

The UK and Europe are developing a strong strategy for the demonstration and deployment of carbon abatement technologies including carbon capture and storage. The UK is also very active in developing the necessary legal and regulatory regime to encourage the deployment of CCS technology.

The UK experts will present the initial results of a study, which maps and analyses the potential for carbon dioxide storage in India commissioned by the International Energy Agency Greenhouse Gas R&D programme, in co-operation with the UK Department for Environment & Rural Affairs.

The workshop is organised by the National Geophysical Research Institute, Hyderabad, on behalf of the Department of Science and Technology.
