Tatra in tech tie-up with Russian co for new CV range

Mayur N. Shah

It is only a technology outsourcing agreement with Kamaz and the marketing will be done by Tatra Vectra.

Mumbai , Jan. 10

Tatra Vectra Motors, a leading commercial vehicle player in the construction and mining industry, has sewed up a technical tie-up with Kamaz of Russia to introduce tippers, trucks and tractor-trailers in the country.

The company will introduce the new commercial vehicle range in fiscal 2007-08, said Mr Rakesh Jinsi, Managing Director, Tatra Vectra Motors. He added that it was only a technology outsourcing agreement with Kamaz and marketing will be done by Tatra Vectra Motors.

The Russian auto conglomerate had earlier (in 2004) shown interest in sourcing components and joint ventures.

The truck and tipper range (multi-axle) would be introduced in the country followed by the tractor-trailer range. The vehicles will be imported in SKD (semi-knock down) condition and assembled at Tatra's Hosur plant in Bangalore and will have a local content of 10 per cent. They will have a GVW (gross vehicle weight) of 25-30 tonnes with a payload capacity of 20 tonnes.

The range could be co-branded (Kamaz and Tatra) though no final decision has been taken so far, said Mr Jinsi.

Tatra Vectra Motors intends selling 200-250 units inclusive of trucks and tippers for the fiscal 2007-08. The company, through its parent (Vectra group), would be investing Rs 50 crore in upgrading the existing manufacturing facility for the forthcoming launch.

Besides, the company will be outsourcing technical assistance from Kamaz for making bus chassis. The company will manufacture the chassis for local consumption initially. It may, however, look at outsourcing to Kamaz in the future. Vectra Motors is part of the $400-million Vectra group having a presence in engineering, automotive, material handling and construction equipment, real estate and the IT sectors in the UAE, Slovakia, Czech Republic, the UK and Canada.
