Coonoor tea sales fetch more

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor , Jan. 11

Producers who sold their teas through the auctions of the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) have earned Rs 29 crore more in 2006 than in 2005.

An analysis of the 51 auctions held in 2006 shows that every kg of the tea fetched Rs 11.75 more than the previous year to average Rs 47.77. But, the increase in price could be got only with reduced volume. In 2006, a total of only 3.74 crore kg could be sold against 4.16 crore kg in 2005.

Consequently, the overall turnover rose to Rs 178.66 crore from Rs 149.89 crore the previous year. This marked an increase of Rs 28.77 crore or 19.19 per cent. The increase occurred in both the CTC and orthodox categories.
