To set up a 10-mtpa plant at Salboni

Kolkata , Jan. 11

Even as the West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, on Thursday reiterated his Government's resolve to acquire land for industry, he stressed upon the imperatives for building political consensus on the issue and educating landowners about the need for industry and its spin-off benefits for the economy as a whole.

Speaking at a function held here today wherein the Jindal Group company, JSW Steel, inked a memorandum of agreement (MoA) with the State Government for setting up a 10-million tonnes per annum (mtpa) steel plant at Salboni near Kharagpur at an investment of Rs 35,000 crore, Mr Bhattacharjee said agriculture accounted for 26 per cent of the State's gross domestic product (GDP) with industry and services accounting for 24 and 50 per cent, respectively"With farmlands being fragmented, the educated youth is no longer keen to be engaged in agriculture. We need industry and IT companies so that the youth of our State can find jobs," Mr Bhattacharjee said. He added that the people need to be educated on the long-term economic benefits of industry. "We need to consolidate our success in agriculture but we cannot ignore industry. If anything, we need to speed up industrialisation," he said.

JSW Steel has proposed to set up a 10-mtpa steel plant in phases in the next 12 years. The first phase, with a capacity of 3 mtpa and an investment of Rs 10,000 crore, is scheduled to be ready in the next four years. Bulk of the land required for the project has been acquired.
