PCI chief's advice

Visakhapatnam , Jan. 12

It is not advisable to place the electronic media under the direct control of the Government, though there is a need to regulate its functioning, said Mr Justice G.N. Ray, Chairman of the Press Council of India.

Participating in a meet-the-press programme organised by the Vizag Journalists' Forum here on Friday, he said the Union Government seemed to be in favour of a separate council for the electronic media.

"However, such a council should be modelled on the Press Council. It too should enjoy the degree of autonomy the Press Council enjoys. Direct Government control over the electronic media is not necessary or warranted," he opined.

`Shun sensationalism'

He said the media, both print and electronic, should shun sensationalism and be responsible in its coverage of events and news.
