Mumbai police initiative to fight cyber crime-related issues

Virtually real
While consumers can physically be present at an e-panchayat, the distinctive feature of the service is that it can be virtually attended, through VoIP, the Internet and even through the mobile phone.

Mumbai , Jan. 12

`e-panchayat,' a Mumbai police initiative to help combat cyber crime-related issues, will go live within two weeks.

The `panchayats' will be held on the first and third Fridays of every month in Mumbai. Trained officers of the cyber crime cell of Mumbai police, as well as IT experts from industry, will act as panelists to redress consumers' grievances. While consumers can physically be present at an e-panchayat, the distinctive feature of the service is that it can be virtually attended, through VoIP, the Internet and mobile phone.

"Individuals and organisations have been sceptical of approaching the police even when there have been grave violations of security. This initiative will not only help in spreading awareness about cyber crime but also enable to provide solutions and advice from the e-panch," said Mr A.N. Roy, Police Commissioner, Mumbai.

Formed in partnership with the Foundation of Information Security and Technology (FIST) and MIEL e-security Pvt Ltd, the e-panchayat will be a facilitator of solutions for cyber crime-related problems, said Mr Roy.

Mr M.N. Kutty Nair, Chairman and Managing Director, MIEL e-securities Pvt Ltd, Mr Atul Nishar, Chairman, Hexaware Technologies, Mr Hanuman Thripathi, Managing Director, Infrasoft Technologies, Mr Shailesh Haribhakti, Managing Director, Haribhakti & Co and Mr Sunil Chandiramani, Partner - Risk advisory services, Ernst and Young, are the five e-panch who will be available for consultation.

e-panchayat would also make legal remedies available either through the police or the courts.
