`Hydroelectric potential untapped'

India has asked the global community to recognise hydroelectric projects, both run-of-river and storage, as all the projects used renewable source, i.e., water, for generating power.
Addressing an international workshop on R&D challenges in carbon capture and storage technology, Mr R.V. Shahi, Secretary (Union Ministry of Power), also wanted the global community to recognise these projects as CDM (clean development mechanism) projects.
Stating that the world had failed to harness the hydroelectrical potential, Mr Shahi said India too could utilise only 21 per cent of its water potential in generating power. "We now have decided to fully harness our hydroelectric potential, which is estimated to be at 1.50 lakh MW," he said.
In order to support the targets to achieve 8-9 per cent growth rate, the country required an installed capacity of more than 2,00,000 MW, which was 60 per cent more than the present capacity. "By 2032, the country would require 8,00,000 MW," he said. The country would also tap non-conventional energy sources in the next few years.
