`Textile machinery imports from UK continue to rise'

Imports of testing, finishing equipment on the rise

Coimbatore , Jan. 13

The British Textile Manufacturing Association (BTMA), the United Kingdom's textile machinery industry's representative body, is of the view that with Indian textile sector keen on increasing its share in global textile market will have to pay greater attention on improving quality. This will, in turn, mean that the latter will be spending more on textile testing equipment/machinery.

According to Mr Alan Little, Director, BTMA, the quest for greater quality control by Indian textile exporters is being reflected in the rising imports of testing and finishing equipment from UK into India in the past two years. India's machinery imports from UK, especially the finishing and testing equipment had during 2005 shown sharper rise at 11.5 million, which is some 80 per cent increase over the previous year.

Equipment Import

Mr Little, who was in Tirupur to attend a technical symposium held by BTMA along with the British Deputy High Commission in Chennai in the hosiery town on Friday, told Business Line that imports of textile equipment from UK by India continued to be buoyant even during the 2006 calendar year, though the actual figures for the period would be available only a little later, in a conservative estimate, its growth will be at least 10 per cent higher than the 2005 figures. The imports would be largely related to textile finishing/testing equipment.

Considering the market potential for textile machinery/equipment in India, BTMA is, according to Mr Alan, considering holding similar technical seminars for other textile machinery sectors of UK , the spinning or weaving/processing equipment in India in the coming years. "We intend to hold in India such symposiums for UK textile machinery at least once in two years," he added.

Symposiums

The BTMA, which conducted its first symposium in Mumbai on January 10 before coming to Tirupur, is planning one more at Delhi on January 15.
