Exports & Imports CII seeks extension of duty passbook scheme Our Bureau
New Delhi , Jan. 13 The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has called for an extension of the Duty Entitlement Passbook (DEPB) Scheme beyond March 31, 2007 to ensure competitiveness of exports. It also called for continuation of the target plus scheme and income-tax benefits to export- oriented units beyond 2009. In a memorandum, submitted to the Directorate-General of Foreign Trade recently, the Chairman of CII's Trade Policy Committee, Mr Sanjay Budhia, called for improving export infrastructure to boost exports from the country. The chamber also asked for a revaluation of the five per cent customs duty on capital goods under the Export Promotion Capital Goods Scheme since peak tariff rates have fallen in the last few years. The chamber also suggested that soyabean, cashew and meat exports be brought under the Visesh Krishi Upaj Yojana, to tap the huge export potential. The country's exports during November last year, at $9.8 billion, were 57 per cent higher than the same period in 2005, Mr Budhia said. With this kind of performance, exports are likely to top $100 billion in the current financial year and $150 billion in 2007-08, he added.
