Sugar export

This is with reference to "Sugar export ban to be fully lifted in 20 days: Pawar" (Business Line, January 6). The Government has decided to lift the ban on sugar exports with immediate effect in anticipation of record production of 240 lakh tonnes. Who will benefit from this? This will be welcome news for the middlemen and exporters.

The farmer gets only a pittance whether sugar is exported or not. The consumers will have to pay a higher price. The benefits of exports will ultimately go to the rich.
