Thiruvananthapuram , Jan. 14

The State Government will take immediate measures to reopen plantations in Kerala that are currently shut, said the Chief Minister, Mr V.S. Achuthanandan.

Speaking at a meeting of the Plantation Standing Committee in the city on Saturday, he said the Government has already started discussions with individual plantation owners to examine their problems. Plantation owners will receive all possible help from the Government to revive their plantations.

CENTRAL AID

The Centre has announced several relief measures for the plantation sector, based on a report from the State. Plantation owners should make use of these relief measures and resume operations, he added.

The State Labour Minister, Mr P.K. Gurudasan, said that 22 plantations in the State are currently closed. The owners of 10 of these have agreed to restart operations. The State Government will look at offering power at a confessional tariff to these plantations.

The State Finance Minister, Dr T.M. Thomas Isaac; the Revenue Minister, Mr K.P. Rajendran; the Agriculture Minister, Mr Mullakkara Ratnakaran; and representatives of plantation owners and trade unions attended the meeting.
