Infineon low cost mobile

Sony Play Station

Bangalore , Jan. 14

Strolling through the VLSI 2007 exhibition conducted in the city, these caught our attention:

Infineon showcased a low-cost mobile phone. Finally. The German firm had announced a reference design — a bare skeleton board that needed an exterior to be built on — back in 2005. It should have been ready for volume production by mid-2006 and in use by now.

Instead, one of the sample handsets designed by the company sits in the glass box. The ultra low-cost phone will be priced at less than $20 (Rs 700-800). "We are awaiting manufacturers," repeated the exhibitor at the VLSI 2007 exhibition .

A Sony Play Station 3 (PS3) was spotted at an exhibition in the city. Sourced from Japan by Rambus Chip Technologies, the sleek gaming machine is everything you hoped it would be. The US-based Rambus, with an engineering centre in Bangalore, was responsible for the bus interfaces (connecting two chips) in the PS2 and 3 consoles. The PS3 received attention from many of the seminar's attendees with its impressively real graphics and high definition playback. This competitor to Microsoft's XBox 360 will be launched this March in India.
