Shortage of material

Aravindan

Kottayam , Jan. 16

Though demand for dried arecanut (Kottadaka) has increased, the market finds shortage of the material, according to Campco sources. Usually the arrival of `Kottadaka' could have begun in December. But due to prolonged rains arrivals were delayed. Initial projections were in favour of a better inflow during the first half of January 2007.

The demand from north Indian buyers has picked up gradually. The growers are still holding on to the stocks expecting the prices to go up as the market signals are positive. The growers had a sigh of relief to see that they would overcome the difficult days when the prices ruled very low during the past few month.

The symptoms of arrivals are not bright from the main producing centres of Kecherry in Thrissur district. The latest price for dried arecanut is Rs 73-78 a kg.
