Tea Jan-Nov tea output up 29.8 million kg P.S. Sundar
Coonoor , Jan 16 The country's tea production in 11 months of 2006 increased by 29.8 million kg over the same period last year, according to the latest figures available from different planting zones. During January-November 2006, totally 909.1 million kg was produced against 879.3 million kg in 2005. The increase was witnessed in the north Indian plantations where the total output at 701.6 million kg was 32.3 million kg more than the output in 2005. In the south, production fell 2.5 million kg to dip to 207.5 million kg. In the north, all the plantation districts except Cachar posted an increase. In Cachar, the output fell marginally by 2.6 million kg. Assam Valley registered the country's largest production at 429.6 million kg (up 14.2 million kg), followed by Dooars in West Bengal at 135.2 million kg (up 12.7 million kg). The total output in Assam rose by 11.6 million kg to reach 470.3 million kg. In West Bengal, the increase was 20.1 million kg to reach 219.1 million kg. In the south, Tamil Nadu lost 3.4 million kg to dip to 139.5 million kg the biggest loss for any state in the country. Kerala managed to post a marginal increase of 1.1 million kg to reach 63.2 million kg.
