Foreign Trade States - West Bengal US team coming today to boost scrap trade Our Bureau
Kolkata , Jan. 16 A US trade delegation, led by the Washington-based Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries Inc (ISRI), will be on a four-day visit to the city from January 17. The visit, close on the heels of the largest-ever American trade delegation to India last month, is expected to strengthen ties between the US producers and Indian consumers of scrap commodities, according to US Government sources. The programme of the 25-member delegation includes meetings with business community, officials of the Directorate-General of Foreign Trade and visits to ports and terminals and networking events. There will be a visit to Durgapur also. The delegation will also visit New Delhi and Mumbai. ISRI represents over 1,400 companies that process and consume scrap commodities including metals, paper, plastics, glass, rubber electronics and textiles. It also provides education and training and promotes public awareness about recycling, global trade and environment. In 2005, US exporters shipped scraps worth about $367 million to India, with ferrous scraps alone recording 200 per cent increase over 2004 shipments. Scraps export accounts for five per cent of the total US exports to India and cover ferrous metals, copper, aluminium, zinc and paper stock. Globally, the US scrap industry shipped $10-billion worth of scraps to 99 countries in 2005, the sources added.
