European banking major BNP Paribas may enter the consumer finance segment in India by floating a non-banking finance company.

"Officials from the bank have evinced interest in setting up a consumer finance company here," Mr Ashwini Kumar, Minister of State for Industry, told reporters here after meeting a French business delegation. The Minister said that BNP Paribas was "very much" interested in setting up operations here. "That is why their officials are here and holding discussions with authorities," he pointed out.

BNP Paribas officials would also be visiting cities like Bangalore and Chennai to hold discussions with various authorities. BNP Paribas is also believed to have confirmed to be the financing arm of European retailer Carrefour.
