Frost nips arrivals at Coonoor tea auctions

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor , Jan 17

With frost affecting the harvest and supply of green leaves for processing at factories, arrivals of black tea for auctions at the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) have slumped this week.

For the third auction of 2007 scheduled for Thursday and Friday, totally 10.23 lakh kg have been catalogued. This is nearly 1.1 lakh kg lower than the volume offered last week.

Of the catalogued quantity, as much as 7.55 lakh kg belong to the leaf grades and 2.68 lakh kg is dust grade.

Again, as much as 9.41 lakh kg belong to CTC variety and only 0.37 lakh kg is orthodox variety.

Orthodox low

The proportion of orthodox variety continues to be low amongst both the leaf and dust grades. In the leaf category, only 0.45 lakh kg belong to the orthodox variety, while 7.1 lakh kg is CTC.

In the dust category, only 0.37 lakh kg belong to the orthodox variety, while 2.31 lakh kg is CTC.

Although the volume offered is low, auctioneers expect prices to remain firm to match the quality. "Most bids in the two auctions this year followed quality and we expect this trend to continue. Besides, with the offers from north India remaining low, the demand is expected to be forceful at Coonoor this week as well," said an auctioneer.
