Rlys registers 17% growth in freight earnings during Apr-Dec

Tonnage during Apr-Dec went up by 9.74%

The Railways has earned Rs 30,241 crore from freight traffic during the April-Dec 2006 this fiscal, registering almost 17 per cent growth. In terms of volume, it has registered 9.74 per cent growth carrying 527.95 million tonnes (481.09 mt). The net tonne kilometres (NTKM), which is a measure of total increase in output of the Railways (conveying increase in distance and volume), went up 9.14 per cent to 3,46,241 million (3,17,256 million). According an official statement, the Railways has generated Rs 30,241.29 crore (Rs 25,866.96 crore) of revenue earnings from freight traffic, registering an increase of 16.91 per cent.

Of the total earnings, Rs 11,383.76 crore came from transportation of 226.18 mt of coal, followed by Rs 2,685.18 crore from 53.93 mt of cement, Rs 2,420.07 crore from 29.47 mt of food grains, Rs 2,262.19 crore from 26.19 mt of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL), Rs 1,951.95 crore from 28.57 mt iron ore for exports, Rs 1,558.13 crore from 26.23 mt of fertilisers, Rs 1,545.69 crore from 14.94 mt of iron and steel for steel plants, Rs 1,429.74 crore from 38.98 mt of raw material for steel plants and Rs 5,004.58 crore from 83.46 mt of other goods.

December earnings

The freight earnings duringDecember was Rs 3,738.84 crore, up 14.99 per cent, compared with Rs 3,251.41 crore during the corresponding period last year. The Railways carried 63.56 mt (59.14 mt) of cargo during the month,registering an increase of 7.47 per cent. The NTKM went up from 39,827 million (41,377 million), an increase of 3.89 per cent.

Of the total earnings in December, Rs 1,442.52 crore came from transportation of 27.82 mt of coal, followed by Rs 3,08.71 crore from 6.10 mt of cement, Rs 275.09 crore from 3.28 mt of food grains, Rs 254.08 crore from 3.60 mt of iron ore for exports, Rs 250.15 crore from 3.04 mt of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL), Rs 238.98 crore from 3.47 mt of fertilisers, Rs 196.17 crore from 1.79 mt of iron & steel for steel plants, Rs 182.03 crore from 4.73 mt of raw material for steel plants and Rs 591.11 crore from 9.73 mt of other goods.
