Bangalore , Jan. 18

The Chennai-based Aircel Business Solutions (ABS), a division of telecom service provider Aircel, on Thursday launched WiMAX in parts of Bangalore city.

ABS is in the final stages of implementing WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) across Bangalore's prominent locations such as the Electronic City, Airport Road, St Johns Road, Jaya Nagar, Rajaji Nagar, and Koramangala and will provide pan-city coverage across many other commercial areas shortly.

ABS is also identifying and deploying Wi-Fi hotspots throughout the city with indoor and outdoor points backhauled with WiMAX. Internet services at these `hotspots' will be enabled through pre-paid cards.

"With all-India backhaul capacities connecting more than 125 cities and towns, ABS is targeting the top 1000 corporates for providing connectivity solutions, content services and M-Commerce services," said Mr Ram Shinde, Head -Aircel Business Solutions.

ABS had conducted WiMAX pilots at Chennai and Bangalore's premier IT event BangaloreIT.in. The company will be WiMAX-ing 26 cities in the near future. Forecasts suggest that the WiMAX subscriber base in India alone is likely to cross the 12-million mark by 2012.
