Hyderabad , Jan. 18

Bhartiya International Ltd (BIL), a New Delhi-based group of entrepreneurs engaged in export of leather products, has proposed to establish a leather park in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh.

The park would be developed as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for manufacturing of leather and leather products, including all kinds of footwear. It would have the potential to employ more than 10,000 people in the next five years.

The Managing Director of BIL, Mr Snehdeep Aggarwal, and the State Secretary for Industries, Ms Y. Srilakshmi, signed a memorandum of understanding in the presence of the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, here today.

According to BIL's plans, about 10 units are to be located in the SEZ. Several leading manufacturers, including its own units, currently involved in the manufacture and processing of leather products, primarily for exports, have expressed interest in setting up units, an official press release said.

The company will commence construction activity within six months of handing over of land. Mr Aggarwal said they would bring the units over a five-year period. BIL has a turnover of $80 million as per its latest available numbers. It plans to create the requisite social infrastructure to support the manufacturing activities within the SEZ.

In addition to BIL, Cosie Leather, Taiwan, Irving Leather, US; Zhejiang Tiancong Import and Export Co and Huatong Industries, both of China; Liberty Shoes, Karnal; Drish Shoes, Panchkula, Crew B.O.S. Products, Gurgaon, Selathar Industries, and Gaitonde Private Ltd, both from Chennai, have expressed interest in setting up units, the release added.
