Kolkata , Jan. 18 Interior decorators in Kolkata are hopeful of generating business to the tune of Rs 170 crore in the current calendar year.
The construction boom in the city would see the creation of about 30 lakh square feet of built-up space this year, according to Mr Bichitresh Saha, President of the Association of Architects, Builders, Interior Decorators & Allied Business (ABID). He was speaking at the inauguration of Interiors 2007, the annual event of the association. Mr Saha said for the interior design business in the city, this would translate into a business opportunity of around Rs 120 crore. With renewal of interiors generating another Rs 40 crore-50 crore of business, the total business opportunity for interior designers in Kolkata would be around Rs 170 crore in 2007. About 150 members of ABID have set up stalls at the Netaji Indoor Stadium, where the exhibition, in its 11th edition this year, is on from January 18 to 22. The fair provides professionals in the interior design and décors space a platform to interact with fellow professionals and to showcase different styles and approaches to design concepts. Towards this end, this year, the stalls have been categorised as "design stalls" and "product stalls". For visitors to the exhibition, the annual event provides an opportunity to view a wide range of mock-up interiors and furniture, as well as accessories such as light fittings, sanitary ware, bathroom fittings, ply, veneer, wood, laminates, kitchen ware, chimneys, glass applications, floorings furnishings and fabrics. According to ABID officials, the association was keen to set up an interior design institute, provided it gets a plot of land from the government at a reasonable price.
