Reforms sought in education sector

Our Bureau

Mumbai , Jan. 18

Mr Sam Pitroda, Chairman of National Knowledge Commission, has appealed to the business community to persuade policy markers to fully open up the education sector.

The Commission has submitted its recommendations to the Prime Minister on the reforms sought in education system, he siad. Mr Pitroda was delivering the H.M. Trivedi memorial lecture at the Indian Merchant Chamber here on Thursday.

The education system needs reform, for at present it leaves youth directionless, with lack of employment skills. India in the coming decades would have the largest set of young people in the world giving us demographically an optimal position over other countries, said Mr. Pitroda.

Strong public opinion will only be able to drive the policies of the Government. Most Indian institutions of higher education - barring a few IITs' - have got generally fossilised and failed to kindle thinking abilities and inspire students. More than 80,000 Indian students go abroad every year for education in foreign institutions spending more than $5 billion. If anyone wants to spend a billion dollar to set up a university and affiliated colleges, let us not put hurdles in his way, he said.
