Will work in re-shaping WTO

Bangalore , Jan. 18

"We don't have to look at India and China as two contestants of the game. They are competitors but also collaborators," said Mr R. Seshasayee, President - CII and Managing Director, Ashok Leyland Ltd.

Addressing the media at the CII Partnership Summit 2007 held here on Thursday, he said globalisation and the recognition of India as a key player are the key themes of the summit.

Stating that world trade is about forging partnerships, wherein risks and rewards are shared equitably, he said the institutional framework of the WTO should be strengthened.

"India has an opportunity and obligation to take a lead role among developing countries to enable reshaping the global agenda in a proactive and responsible manner," he added. Mr Seshasayee said CII would work with the Government in re-shaping WTO in the context of geo-economics. Inclusive growth would be a key initiative that CII would pursue with the Government. For this, he said, an institutional mechanism would be put in place.

He added that India and Indian industry are committed to multilateral trade agreements, but also believes that bilateral agreements would help engage further with trade partners.

CII would commission a study on the impact of globalisation on Indian industry in three specific sectors: auto components, textiles, and drugs and pharmaceuticals. This would enable the organisation to prepare the industry for the next wave of growth in the global arena, Mr Seshasayee said.
