ISPs DoT to resume ISP licences Thomas K Thomas
New Delhi , Jan. 18 The Department of Telecom (DoT) has decided to resume issuing fresh licences for ISPs without Net telephony. Those companies that have applied for an ISP licence with Net telephony will have to wait till the new Internet policy is in place. Applications from more than 50 companies seeking ISP licences are waiting approval from the Government. Senior DoT officials told Business Line that a decision has been taken to take a dual approach with respect to fresh applications seeking ISP licence. "Those companies that have applied for Net telephony will be impacted by the new policy, which is being currently discussed by the telecom regulator. Therefore, they will have to wait till we announce the final Internet policy. The other applications will be cleared at the earliest," said a DoT official. The applications have been pending with the DoT for 6-8 months now, because of procedural delays, according to Department officials. The applications were put on hold after it was found that some of the existing ISPs' networks were being used for carrying illegal international long-distance calls.
