Bharti will be offering both GSM and the third generation (3G) services in Sri Lanka.
New Delhi , Jan. 18 Bharti Airtel on Thursday announced that it has received a letter of offer from the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka to provide cellular services in Sri Lanka. The move is in line with the company's strategy to get into developing markets such as Africa and South Asia. Bharti operates cellular services in the Seychelles and is trying to foray into countries such as Gabon. Bharti Global has also been awarded licences to operate 2G and 3G services in Jersey and Guernsey in Europe. Bharti will be the fifth mobile operator in Sri Lanka, which has nearly 3.5 million subscribers, largely dominated by the Telecom Malaysia's local subsidiary Dialog Telecom. Bharti will be offering both GSM and the third generation (3G) services in Sri Lanka. Bharti Airtel also announced an investment of over $2 billion in 2007-08 to expand network in India. The company had earmarked a similar amount for the year 2006-07. "Of the total capex for the next financial year, maximum will go for the rural areas," said Mr Akhil Gupta, Joint Managing Director, Bharti Airtel, on the sidelines of a conference organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry and Ericsson.
