Telemarketing calls may stop

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Jan.18

The Department of Telecom (DoT) has said that it was working on a legislation to tackle issues relating to unwanted telemarketing calls. Senior DoT officials said that the legislation would be introduced in Parliament after which mobile operators who permit unwanted telemarketing calls would be taken to task. "The law will empower us to take action against errant operators," said a DoT official.

The DoT move comes even as operators protested a Rs 50 lakh fine imposed by the Delhi State Consumer Commission on Airtel and the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) for their failure to stop unsolicited calls and SMS by telemarketing and banking companies to mobile users. Cellular operators said the fine was unfair because the Supreme Court was hearing the issue. "We will contest the fine," said a COAI official.
