New Delhi , Jan. 18

Industry chamber Assocham has asked the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, to convene a meeting of representatives of industry, farmers and State and Central Government officials to sort out issues relating to SEZs.

Addressing a conference here today, the newly elected President of the chamber, Mr Venugopal N. Dhoot, said, "In case the country has to achieve 10 per cent growth for 10 consecutive years, SEZs are necessary to create huge employment and accelerate the country's exports and its planned development."

He added, "Nobody should be permitted to cheat farmers and grab their land for purposes of SEZs," and urged all political parties to create a consensus to make India a global economic hub so that benefits of growth are shared equally by all.

Mr Dhoot also sought re-modelling of the agriculture sector to catalyse higher growth in both services and manufacturing to help India achieve faster growth.

Talking of the imperatives of 10 per cent annual GDP growth, Mr Dhoot said that the focus of the 11th Plan should be on agriculture, infrastructure and development of human capital.

Although infrastructure has been growing at eight per cent, economic reform should be accelerated to exploit full growth potential of the sector, he said. Infrastructure industries can grow at the rate of 12 per cent annually by way of increased efficiency and higher investment.
