Bond prices end higher

Our Bureau

Mumbai, Jan.19

Bond prices rose by around over 20 paise on speculation that the government auction may be cancelled or the scheduled amount reduced. Total traded volumes on the order matching system were Rs 1,450 crore (Rs 1,395 crore). Dealers said that prices initially fell by around 30 paise as inflation zoomed to 6.12 per cent in the week ended January 6, from 5.58 per cent in the previous week. However, this was close to the expected 6.11 per cent. "The bond market was bearish due to the higher inflation figure and in anticipation of the auction next week. But speculation about a possible cut in the auction amount, or even a cancellation, aided prices to end higher," said a dealer at a private bank. The auction of 15-20 year paper for Rs 5,000 crore is scheduled to take place next week.

The 8.07 per cent-10 year-2017 benchmark paper opened at Rs 101.65 (7.83 per cent YTM), touched an intra-day low of Rs 101.35 (7.87 per cent YTM) but closed at Rs 98.75 (7.78 per cent YTM). On Thursday, the paper had closed at Rs 101.67 (7.82 per cent YTM). The 7.59 per cent, 9-year 2016 paper opened at Rs 98.60 (7.80 per cent YTM) and closed at Rs 98.75 (7.75 per cent YTM) against Thursday's Rs 98.60 (7.80 per cent).
