Chennai Jan. 20 The Tamil Nadu Government will give priority status to small-scale and agro-based industries, which generate large employment, said the Governor, Mr Surjit Singh Barnala, in his address to the Assembly on Saturday.

The State will also promote industries that create jobs while also encouraging major industries and providing facilities for export-oriented units.

Mr Barnala said that the State Government has entered into agreements with the private sector for six major industrial projects involving investments of Rs 2,700 crore and generation of about 50,000 direct and indirect jobs.

The Government policy will be to continue to promote employment opportunities for the local youth where industries are established.

With 56 per cent of the population dependent on the agriculture sector, the Government will aim to achieve a minimum of 4 per cent growth in agriculture.

The State Government will take steps to ensure that the youth from families dependent on agriculture also benefit from the developments in the industrial and service sectors, he said.
