Kolkata Jan. 21 The Union Minister for State for Food Processing, Mr Subodh Kant Sahai, has presented a strong case for setting up a cold storage chain in the public private partnership (PPP) mode across the country.

Speaking at a seminar on "Integrated Value Chain Management System in Food and Horticulture Sector" organised here by the Indian Chamber of Commerce on Saturday, Mr Sahai said a substantial quantity of food products, fruits and vegetables produced in the country was wasted owing to lack of appropriate storage facilities. The establishment of cold chains and marketing networks, especially at sea ports, railway stations and airports across the country, would go a long way in containing this wastage.

Potential market

Mr Sahai said that, with the middle class comprising 40 per cent of the nation's population and having buying capacities, it was only appropriate that this potential market should be harnessed with the setting up of cold chains. He exhorted the West Bengal Government to formulate a "demand-oriented" farm and food processing policy. He said that since farmers in the State get less returns on account for fragmented land holdings here, the PPP model would be most effective in West Bengal.

The West Bengal's Minister for Food Processing Industries and Horticulture, Mr Mohanta Chatterjee, said the State had taken several steps to build up linkages and a viable growth plan for food processing industries.
