The State's annual biotechnology show is slated to be held during June 7-9. The think-tank, the Vision Group on Biotechnology, plans to revamp, update the 2001 policy and highlight the need for quality education in biotechnology, accreditation of institutions and management training for biotechnologists at premier B-schools, according to its chairperson, Ms Kiran Mazumdar Shaw.
BIO LAUNCH
At the launch of Bangalore Bio 2007 here, Ms Mazumdar Shaw, CMD of Biocon Ltd, said the group has decided to start a pilot scheme for science management programmes. This would involve the Xavier Institute of Management Education, Institute for Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology; and industries, including Biocon. This is the first such attempt at science management that is lacking in the country, Ms Mazumdar Shaw said. The seventh edition of the biotechnology show will be held from June 7 to 9. "We hope to be able to launch a revamped and updated version of the Biotech Policy at the event. We may also be able to inaugurate Phase 1 of the biotechnology park, Helix, by then, which will house the IBAB and the Centre for Human Genomics. This will be the first step for the Vision Group," she said.
`Think big'
The three-day event is based on the theme `Think BIG (biotechnology, innovation and growth).' It has got bookings from 600 delegates from 20 countries and 150 companies. The conference will focus on intellectual property issues, regulatory problems and the judicial infrastructure that is needed to address this area, she said.
New feature
A new feature will be `Biotech trails' or industry visits organised for delegates during the event. Dr K.K. Narayanan, head of agribiotech company Metahelix and chairman of the Association for Biotech-Led Enterprises (ABLE), said the domestic industry stood at $1.5 billion and looked to touch $5 billion by 2010.
