Kolkata Jan. 22 The West Bengal Government on Monday reiterated its willingness to discuss with the Trinamool Congress chief, Ms Mamata Banerjee, the issue of compensation for farmers who have been affected following acquisition of farmland in Singur for the Tata small car project.

Speaking to presspersons here at Writers' Buildings, the West Bengal Minister of Industries & Commerce, Mr Nirupam Sen, said the State Government had no reservations in discussing the issue with Ms Banerjee. He, however, ruled out the possibility of the State Government writing any letter to Ms Banerjee in this regard.

He said the Chief Minister's secretariat had written four letters to the Trinamool leader asking her to come and discuss the issue across the table but there had been no response from her end.

Meanwhile, Ms Mamata Banerjee, who is recuperating at her residence after being discharged from hospital, said she was hurt over the "surreptitious manner" in which the Tatas were allowed to commence construction in Singur on Sunday after prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC were extended till January 28. On Monday, a group of Trinamool activists gathered in front of the Tata Centre building on Chowringhee and smeared coal tar on its gates in protest against the beginning of construction.

Concern over SEZ project

In another development, Mr Manas Bhuniya, Congress leader in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, met Mr Nirupam Sen and expressed concern over the fact that the Haldia Development Authority had not formally withdrawn its notice for acquisition of land in Nandigram in East Mednipur district for a SEZ project.

He said the Congress party was all for industrialisation, development and SEZs but would not allow acquisition of multi-crop farmland and land where dwelling units, temples and mosques were located for the purpose. He said the party's stand in this regard had been conveyed to the State Government.

Mr Bhuniya said the Congress party would organise a "Bhoomi Sammelan" here in the beginning of February even as he called for a policy decision on acquisition of land for SEZs that would "strike a balance between the needs of agriculture and industry".
