Investors assure Rs 3,300 cr for Mangalore

IT, hospitality majors to bring in large chunk

Mangalore Jan. 22 Investors from various industries — including players from the information technology sector such as Wipro and TCS, and hospitality sector such as Maurya and Leela Group — have assured investments to the tune of Rs 3,301 crore in Mangalore in the coming two to three years.

The Karnataka Government had organised an investors' meet in Mangalore on Monday to attract investments to Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

Addressing presspersons after the meet, Mr Katta Subrahmanya Naidu, Industries Minister, said that 14 companies have assured investments of around Rs 3,301 crore in 430 acres of land in these two districts. These investments are likely to generate around 67,000 jobs in the coming years.

IT SECTOR

Mr Naidu said that Wipro has shown interest to set up an IT Park in Mangalore on 100 acres of land. In the first stage, the company will invest around Rs 180 crore. It will invest a total of Rs 1,800 crore in the due course of time. The IT park is expected to provide jobs to 15,000 people, he said.

TCS has given an assurance to invest around Rs 640 crore on its campus in 100 acres. The project is likely to generate 20,000 jobs, he said.

A Dubai-based company, promoted by NRIs, has promised investments to the tune of Rs 150 crore on 50 acres of land for its Mangalore Internet City project. Around 10,000 jobs are likely to be created in this project.

Other IT companies such as Dia Systems and Raju Group are likely to invest Rs 10 crore and Rs 75 crore respectively, in their projects. Dia Systems is likely to generate around 1,000 jobs and Raju Group 5,000 jobs. Their land requirement is 10 acres (Dia) and 35 acres (Raju Group), Me Naidu said.

The Bangalore-based B&B Infrastructure Group wants to set up an IT park on 25 acres with an investment of Rs 250 crore, creating 5,000 employment opportunities in that sector.

He said the Leela Group wants to invest around Rs 350 crore in its IT and hotel projects on 75 acres. Its projects envisage creation of 5,000 jobs.

The Maurya Group wants to invest Rs 100 crore in its project on 10 acres. Around 200 jobs are expected from the project. Spotlight Hotel's investment plans are to the tune of Rs 30 crore on five acres.

The Minister said that the MRP Group had shown interest to invest Rs 100 crore in IT park and hotel project in the region. Nearly 500 jobs are expected from this proposal.

Blue Valley Hotel Group has plans to invest Rs 8 crore in the hotel industry on three acres. This project may create 300 jobs.

MANUFACTURING

Of the 14 proposals received on Monday, only two are from the manufacturing sector. Mr Naidu said that Suzlon Company has already approved investments to the tune of Rs 500 crore in its windmill project in Udupi district. "The company has shown interest to invest another Rs 1,000 crore for expansion activities," Mr Naidu said, adding 3,000 jobs are expected from this project.

A grinding mill unit has been proposed by one Mr Padmanabha Shetty on three acres of land at a cost of Rs 6 crore, creating 50 jobs, he said.

In the coming days other companies such as Satyam Computers and Murdeshwar Ceramics and the NRI businessman, Mr B.R. Shetty, are likely to invest another Rs 500 crore, he said.
