`SMEs have bigger role to play in economy'

Mangalore Jan. 23 Indian economy is on a high growth trajectory and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have a pivotal role to play in contributing to its growth, according to Mr Pawan Kumar Bansal, Union Minister of State for Finance.

A Corporation Bank release said here on Tuesday that Mr Bansal was speaking on the occasion of `National SME Excellence Award' ceremony, organised by the bank in Mumbai on January 22.

Complimenting the initiative of Corporation Bank to recognise the excellence among SMEs, he said such a measure would have a demonstrating effect among the entrepreneurs in the country.

Stating that Corporation Bank is on a strong growth plan, he said it would emerge as a significant player in the financial market of the country in the medium term.

The Minister said that the Government is committed to extending its support for the accelerated growth of SME sector and that public sector banks have a significant role to play.

Liberalisation of economy has seen many successful first generation entrepreneurs emerging, who have responded to the competition and made their mark, he added.

Mr Kishore Biyani, Managing Director of Future Group, who was the guest of honour, said that Corporation Bank was among the first to believe in their entrepreneurial skills, the release added.
