Demand for back issues

Hyderabad, Jan. 24 Chandamama, the multilingual children's magazine that entertained people of all ages for generations, is going digital, with the publishers deciding to digitally archive thousands of pages of stories and other content the magazine has built up in the last 60 years.

"There has been a steady demand for back issues. Unfortunately, a lot of copies were destroyed in the cyclone that hit Chennai in 1977," a Chandamama spokesperson said.

"We were left with just a few file copies of every issue published since 1947. These copies are being maintained in our library for purposes of reference," he said.

First published in Telugu and Tamil, the magazine slowly covered almost all the major Indian languages, including a tribal language Santhali, and English.

Recognising the increasing demand for back issues and realising the importance of going digital, the publishers had decided to digitise all the content. "Call it coincidence, Sri Venkateswara Digital Library in Tirupati offered to digitise all issues of Chandamama in all languages since the inception 60 years ago," according to Mr Vishwanatha Reddi, Managing Director.

The library is affiliated to the Digital Library of India, a consortium of Carnegie Mellon University of the US and the Union Government. The consortium is engaged in creating a Universal Digital Library of books and magazines in print as well as manuscripts.

The S.V. Digital Library formally presented the first 1,00,000 pages of the digitised content to the publishers to upload them in Chandamama's and DLI's (http://dli.iiit.ac.in) Web sites.

In the next 3-4 months, the remaining 3.5 lakh pages are also to be completely digitised. One set of CDs would be available in the library. Chandamama is published in 13 languages at present, he said.
