India, Finland to strengthen ties

India and Finland today said that bilateral relations would gain further momentum in the light of the robust existing economic ties between them.
Speaking at a business luncheon meeting with Finland President Ms Tarja Halonen, Union Commerce & Industry Minister Mr Kamal Nath sought Finland's help in voicing the concerns of India and the developing world in the Doha round negotiations of the WTO.
The Finnish President agreed that in the multilateral trading framework trade should not only be free but also fair.
Earlier, the Minister of Trade & Industry of Finland, Mr Mauri Pekkarinen, offered his country's help to India in infrastructure, environment technology and power.
Total exports from India to Finland last year stood at $202 million, while imports were worth $580 million.
Major items of export to Finland include readymade garments, drugs and pharma products and machinery and instruments, while major import items include machinery except electronics and electrical, electronic goods and computer software, an official release said.
