``We have identified 28 cities for implementation of city gas distribution projects," said Mr U.D. Choubey, Director (Marketing), GAIL. The cities include 13 polluted cities identified by the Supreme Court and the remaining on business viability basis. The Supreme Court had identified Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Agra, Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, Pune, Faridabad, Patna, Ahmedabad, Sholapur, and Kolkata as the most polluted. GAIL has identified Allahabad, Bareilly, Jhansi, Mathura, Noida, Navi Mumbai, Gwalior, Indore, Ujjain, Rajahmundry, Vijayawada, Rajkot, Surendranagar, Kota and Vadodara.
Expansion plan
GAIL plans to implement the projects as a joint venture with an oil marketing company. Mr Choubey was speaking on the occasion of the inauguration of IGL Bhawan here. Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL), which is into the business of supplying CNG to automobiles and PNG for domestic cooking in the Capital, has drawn an ambitious expansion plan to meet the requirements of the Commonwealth Games in 2010. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Murli Deora, Union Petroleum Minister, said, ``I am sure that IGL will rise to the occasion as it has in the past and would significantly contribute towards maintaining the Capital city pollution-free, thereby, enabling the prestigious Commonwealth Games to be held in a better environment.'' The Delhi Chief Minister, Ms Sheila Dikshit, was also present at the occasion.
